Dust of Snow (बर्फ की धूल)

Central Idea

The poem expresses the significance of small things in changing one’s attitude. The poet appreciates the beauty of the snowflakes, which changed his mood and saved many precious moments from being wasted away. The crow shakes off the snow dust from the hemlock tree. The same way one can shake off the sadness from one’s heart.

Thinking About the Poem Questions & Answers

  1. What is a “Dust of Snow”? What does the poet say has changed his mood? How has the poet’s mood changed?

Ans. The ‘Dust of Snow’ means the fine particles or flakes of snow. This ‘Dust of Snow’ changed the poet’s mood. The Poet’s mood changed from the state of sadness to happiness. He was regretting throughout the day but the sudden fall of dust of snow made him happy and saved rest of the day.

  1. How does Frost present nature in this poem? The following questions may help you to think of an answer.

(i) What are the birds that are usually named in poems? Do you think a crow is often mentioned in poems? What images come to your mind when you think of a crow?

Ans. Frost presents nature in a very different manner in the poem.

(i) Pervasively in other nature poems we often see the use of birds such as nightingales, cuckoo, peacock, sparrows etc. But here Frost has used a crow in the poem which totally a different thinking. A crow is considered inauspicious and is generally taken as bad omen with something dark, black and foreboding. Thinking of a crow brings depressing and sorrowful images in our mind.

(ii) Again ‘what is ‘a hemlock tree’? Why does not the poet write about a more beautiful tree such as a maple, or an oak, or a ‘pine’?

  1. The poet uses ‘A Hemlock Tree’ which is poisonous tree. Frost did not write about a more beautiful tree such as a maple, or oak, or pine because these trees are a symbol of happiness, beauty and positivity whereas the poet wanted to symbolise the feelings of Regret and sadness which a hemlock tree suits as it is also considered inauspicious that is why he has used ‘a hemlock tree’,

(iii) What do the ‘crow’ and ‘hemlock’ represent joy or sorrow? What does the dust of snow that the crow shakes off a hemlock tree stand for?

Ans. Both the ‘Crow’ and ‘Hemlook’ represent sorrow. ‘The Dust of Snow’ that the crow shakes off represents the natural and sudden Joy that Frost experiences. The dust of snow signalled something nice and joyful which changes his (poet) mood.

  1. Have there been times when you felt depressed or hopeless? Have you experienced a similar moment that changed your mood that day?

Ans. Yes, I have felt depressed or hopeless several times like when I lost in a competition for which I practiced really hard and a time when I performed badly in my exams. Yes I experienced a similar moment that changed my mood that day when I was encouraged by my family and friends on both the above mentioned situations. Those encouraging words like “There is always a second chance” healed me and made my approach optimistic. Note: (Answer may vary according to your situations and experiences)

Long Answer Type Questions

Q.1. Poets have great power of imagination Robert Frost also explains his imagination very well and proves that sometime the bad symbols change into a boon. Discuss.

Here the poet uses crow and a hemlock tree which are considered inauspicious to demonstrate how the dejected and inauspicious things can be as helpful as good ones.

Here the small action/moment of falling dust of snow signalled something good and joyful, and his mood changed.
