SECTION-A: (Reading)
- Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions that follow:
Many people complain that they have broken down through over-work. In the majority of such cases, the break-down is more frequently the result of foolishly wasted energy. If you would secure health, you must learn to work without friction. To become anxious or excited or to worry over needless details is to invite a breakdown. Work whether of brain or body, is beneficial and health-giving and the man who can work with a steady and calm persistency, freed from all anxiety and worry, and with his mind utterly oblivious to all but the work he has in hand, will not only accomplish far more than the man who is always hurried and anxious, but he will retain his health, a boon which the other quickly forfeits.

Ans- Many people complain about the breakdown through overwork.
(b) What is the cause of breakdown?

(d) What is useful and health-giving?

SECTION B: (Writing)
- Write an article on any one of the following topics in about 100-150 words:
(a) Importance of Games and Sports at School
(b) The Game You Like Most
(c) Usefulness of a good library.
The Game You Like Most
- Introduction-I am a good player. Hence, I take part in all the outdoor games. Each boy has his own choice. Some like hockey, other’s like football, while many others consider cricket to be their best game. The game which I like most is football.
- The Points in Favour of My Choice-Now, you can ask me why I prefer football to any other game. Well, it can be easily explained. The rnain object of all games is to give us some exercise. This is one reason why football is my favourite game. It helps our body to grow. It brings a sense of discipline and a habit of endurance in us. A good football player is sure to succeed in any walk of life. He can make himself a great soldier to defend his country. He can be a clever statesman to run the government.
- Comparison with Other Games-But is there no other game which gives hard exercise? Surely, none other except hockey. But hockey carries many risks for the life of a player. It also makes the player quarrelsome. Often, he uses sticks as his weapon.
- Economical and Easy to Learn-Another reason of my choice is that it is very economical. It does not require costly equipment. A ball and a well-levelled ground is all that is required to start our game. And then it is easy to pick up its rules. We do not require any special coach for it is learnt so easily by boys that they begin to play it in a very young age. They dare not play hockey or cricket.
- How it is Played? – Like: Hockey or Cricket, Football is played between two teams of eleven boys. A team consists of five forwards, three half backs, two full backs and one goalkeeper. The player kicks the ball with his feet. But he may touch it with any other part except with his hands. The goalkeeper, however, can use his hands as well. A player may be tempted to push an opponent to go far ahead of the ball near the opposite goal. So, pushing and off side are regarded as a foul play. The penalty for a foul is a kick by a player of the opposite team. The fewer fouls you make, the more chances you have to win the game.
- Conclusion-The game of football gives us good exercise. We have to keep vigilant and alert. It encourages the team spirit.

We are living in a changing era, but few things never lessen their stability, freshness and attraction. India is such a country. Archaic and new at the same time. The history of Nalanda, Taxila and Vikramshila universities of the country is rich. Today, we have to re-establish the ancient glory of India by solving the current problems through technologies. We have to prove the supremacy of the knowledge of India in the world and this is possible only when we add reference of present by turning over the golden pages of the past.

- Answer any one of the following questions in about 80 words:
(a) What was Gondwana? What had happened for 500 million years? How is Antarctica helpful to find the history of the Earth?
Ans- Six hundred fifty million years ago, a giant amalgamated southern supercontinent “Gondwana” did indeed exist, centred roughly around the present day Antarctica. For 500 million years Gondwana thrived, but around the time when dinasaurs were wiped out and the age of mammals got under way, the landmass was forced to separate into countries, shaping the globe much as we know it today. Only Antarctica on this earth presently is in its purest and original form as it holds in its ice-cores half-million-year-old carbon records trapped in its layers of ice. Antarctica has never sustained a human population and therefore remains relatively ‘pristine’ in this respect. So, Antarctica is the place to go to understand the earth’s present, past and future.
(b) Why did the king kill the hundredth tiger?
